If one is to look beyond Turkey‘s large, cosmopolitan, bustling cities, such as Istanbul or Ankara, and its popular coastal resorts like Antalya or Bodrum, a pleasant, unexpected surprise awaits.
We are talking about Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey that could comfortably feature among the most striking sceneries in the world. Below the moonscape surface created by ancient lava formations lay dozens of underground cities, but only some are available to the public. Its cave hotels are one of a kind, and we have scoured the web to find the best value!

What to see & do in Cappadocia
You’ll be thrilled to know your cave hotel experience is just the tip of the iceberg:
- Göreme, surrounded by a spectacular landscape filled with fairy chimneys and rock churches, is also a starting point for many hikes and the place to be for balloon rides. The Göreme Open Air Museum is an absolute must, consisting of cave churches carved out by Orthodox monks.
- Uchisar, a small town dominated by its rock castle. Pigeon Valley connects Göreme and Uchisar, which makes for a 1.5 hour scenic walk.
- Valleys: Love Valley, Red Valley, Rose Valley, Devrent Valley and Pasabag Valley are all well worth a hike, with bizarre rock formations, fairy chimneys and abandoned cave homes: a truly wonderful setting.
- Avanos, renowned for its pottery, also boasts an attractive old town and views over the river. If you want to take something back home, this is the place to go, but beware of scams and always bargain.
